Cedar Rapids, IA – Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery announces its annual Memorial Day weekend events including Avenue of Flags and Memorial Day program. The cemetery will be staffed beginning Saturday, May 25 through Monday, May 27 from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM each day.

Avenue of Flags – In tribute to our veterans, more than 1,500 large American Flags will line the avenues of beautiful Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Drive though with your family from Sunday morning, May 29 through Monday afternoon, May 27. It’s a spectacular sight!

Memorial Day Tribute – Join us at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery on Monday, May 27 at 11:00 a.m. for live music, rifle salute, taps presentation, and a personalized balloon release. Be sure to come early so you can add the names of your loved ones who serve, or have served, to the balloons.

Our speaker will be Paul Ramirez, First Sargeant of the 294^th Medical Company (ASMC). He served as a combat medic in Desert Storm (1990-1991) and Operation Freedom (2005-2006).

Live music will be performed by award-winning, Nashville based Breath of Soul. They were recently selected by the country super-group, Lady antebellum, to perform as their opening act. “Breath of Soul has received numerous accolades for their stellar arrangements, sheer talent, harmonic blend, strong lead vocals and their original percussive style.”

More than 75 free family activities offered June 1 during Tanager Place Summer Fest
Tanager Place will offer more than 75 FREE activities for
children and families during Summer Fest 2013 on Saturday, June 1 from 3:30 – 8:30 p.m. at
the Rockwell Collins Sports Complex (F Ave and Collins Rd. NE). Free and open to the public,
Summer Fest includes games, crafts, interactive displays and activity stations perfect for the
entire family.

Families can enjoy the General Mills “Make Your Own Cereal” tent, St. Luke’s bike safety and
helmet giveaway, a kids craft tent, mini golf, mascot mania, and “Safety Town” with interactive
displays highlighting dental care, nutrition, lead poisoning, disaster preparedness, water safety
and STEM activities (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).

Other favorites include the “Revved Up 4 Tanager Place” Kids Charity Car & Motorcycle Show
sponsored by Eddie’s Rod & Custom, and a balloon glow at dusk (weather permitting).

Nominal fees for concession and inflatable rides. Tanager Place thanks General Mills for serving
as event sponsor. Proceeds go to support the more than 3,000 children impacted by Tanager

Our Mission

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to
creating, finding, and supporting programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children.

Our History

Why Ronald McDonald House?

The idea for a Ronald McDonald House began in Philadelphia in 1973, when Fred Hill, a member of the
Philadelphia Eagles football team, learned that his three year old daughter, Kim, had leukemia. The
Eagles organized fundraising efforts to assist Kim's, as well as other children's, fight against leukemia.
During the course of these efforts, the idea of a 'home-away-from-home' where out-of-town families
could stay during their child's hospital treatment was born.

Why Ronald McDonald?

The Eagles enlisted the help of their local McDonald's restaurants to raise money for the first-ever
house. In 1974, the Philadelphia House opened bearing the name of McDonald's happy clown, Ronald
McDonald. Today there are over 300 Ronald McDonald Houses worldwide, all serving the needs
of families during their child's hospitalization. Each House is independently owned and operated.
McDonald's is only one of many generous donors, so community-wide support is the essential
ingredient for each House.

The Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City

The Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City, opened in 1985, has been a "home away from home" for over
70,000 family members from all 99 Iowa Counties, all 50 states, and 55 foreign countries. Since opening,
the Ronald McDonald House has grown in capacity from 15 rooms to the current capacity of 31 rooms
following the House expansion in 1999-2001.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa

In 2008 the organization embarked on an expanded mission to help families and children in Eastern
Iowa outside the walls of the Ronald McDonald House, resulting in a change in our organizational
name to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa. The Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City
continues to operate as the cornerstone program while enabling the grant and scholarship programs to
make a significant impact in surrounding communities.

Since 2008, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa has provided funding to 32 non-profit
organizations whose programs improve the quality of life for children and their families in Eastern Iowa.
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa has also offered 22 scholarships to graduating seniors
from Eastern Iowa intent on continuing their education after high school.

Come splash and join the fun on the Iowa River Sat. June 8th for the 4th Annual Great Iowa River Canoe and Kayak Race - with Company Challenge! Awards will be given to winners of canoe and kayak divisions and a Traveling Paddle Award for the Company Challenge. The 9 mile paddling race begins at Sturgis Ferry, Iowa City and ends at Hills Access, Hills, Iowa. In addition there will be a pancake breakfast provided by Hy-Vee during registration prior to the race. The race is a community building and fundraising event. Race organizers are Iowa Valley RC&D, Fin & Feather and the City of Iowa City. Funds will support the Iowa Valley RC&D in their work on behalf of conservation, watershed, local foods, scenic byways, tourism, and economic development projects. Register online at www.ivrcd.org. K-8 kids and their families are invited to join iExploreSTEM (www.iExploreSTEM<http://www.iExploreSTEM>) for an exciting FREE afternoon of hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The event will be held at the McKinley Middle School Grounds from 1-5 PM on June 9 in Cedar Rapids. Steve Goodall Principal of Mckinley Middle School and Mrs. Iowa International 2013 LaSheila Yates are producing the event.

Festival activities challenge children to think – to solve STEM problems – and introduce them to careers in STEM. Festivals are designed so that regardless of abilities, all children succeed and have fun. Kids might design and build a windmill, dissect a virtual cadaver, or explore a career through video games.

Meet local STEM professionals and help design a city, explore the skies, or extract DNA from bananas. There will be something for everyone, and no registration is needed. Show up ready to have fun and learn. Parents, stop at our careers booth to learn about local STEM career training opportunities.

If you haven't attended a festival you've missed a tornado in a box, stomp rockets, turtles and snakes, flying sharks, robots, DNA bracelets, gumdrop bridges, and so much more.

iExploreSTEM Cedar Rapids is part of Living with the Floods a statewide project to commemorate recent flood events and celebrate progress toward recovery in Iowa.

Sarah Knight passed away suddenly, on September 26th, 2011, in the classroom she taught in. She was 25 and after a lengthy autopsy they came back with the diagnosis of Myocarditis, a viral infection of the heart.

This is a very serious disease and many people do not know they have it. It tends to take people’s lives from very young ages and then young adults. Sarah had a passion for teaching her children, she was a bilingual teacher in the Quad Cities. She studied at Western Illinois and was currently working on her masters.

All proceeds of this benefit are going towards the Myocarditis Foundation and the Sarah Knight Bilingual Scholarship.
