DESCRIPTION:7th Annual Sleep Out for the Homeless is November 10

Volunteers to raise money and awareness for homelessness with overnight stay at Veterans’ Memorial Stadium

CEDAR RAPIDS\, IA – October 25\, 2012 – Linn County Veteran Affairs and  the Community Circle of Care will hold their seventh annual Sleep Out  for the Homeless on Saturday\, November 10\, 2012 at Veterans Memorial  Stadium in Cedar Rapids as part of National Hunger and Homelessness  Awareness Week (Nov. 11-17). The event will run from 5 p.m. November 10  through 6 a.m. November 11 regardless of weather conditions.

The public is invited to participate in the Sleep Out by collecting  pledges and sleeping outside in cardboard boxes to raise awareness of  homelessness in Linn County and to raise money for area shelters. The  Community Circle of Care will also kickoff its annual blanket drive.

“Our goal is to raise awareness of the problem of homelessness in Linn  County and to raise money for the shelters that serve those in need\,”  said Don Tyne\, director of Linn County Veteran Affairs and Co-Chair of  the Sleep Out. “Even if people can’t sleep out\, we hope they will stop  by and join us for the activities and entertainment. This is a  family-oriented event\,” said Tyne.

Of the 5\,800 persons served by local homeless assistance programs in FY11\, 50 percent were children.

Last year’s Sleep Out raised $20\,000 for local homeless programs. Money  raised from this year’s Sleep Out will be distributed to the following  Linn County homeless assistance programs:


 *   Catherine McAuley Center Transitional Housing Program
 *   Catholic Worker House
 *   Cedar House Shelter
 *   Foundation 2 Youth Shelter
 *   HACAP Transitional Housing
 *   Mission of Hope
 *   Salvation Army Emergency Lodging Program
 *   Waypoint Domestic Violence Program / Madge Phillips Center
 *   Willis Dady Emergency Shelter

Great Clips will be offering haircuts from 6 – 9 p.m. in exchange for  food or cash donations; Habitat for Humanity will be auctioning off a  cardboard house; and a silent auction will be held as part of the  fundraising efforts the night of the event.

Hot soup\, snacks and beverages will be donated by area businesses and  the Salvation Army. Indoor restrooms\, security and family entertainment  will also be provided. Cardboard will be provided to create a makeshift  shelter. Sleep Out participants should dress warmly and bring their own  sleeping bags or blankets.
