DESCRIPTION:February is American Heart Month\, and Feb. 1 is the 10th Annual National Wear Red Day\, both drawing attention to cardiovascular disease and the efforts to stop America’s number one killer\, which for nearly thirty years has affected women in far greater numbers than men.
Since 1963\, February has been celebrated as American Heart Month to urge Americans to join the battle against heart disease. February also has been the signature month for the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women campaign and the message that heart disease is not only a man’s problem. Consider these statistics:

Heart disease is still our No. 1 killer – it affects more women than men and is more deadly than all forms of cancer combined.

o Heart disease causes one in three women’s deaths each year\, killing approximately one woman every minute.

o An estimated 43 million women in the U.S. are affected by heart disease.

o Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.

[cid:image001.jpg@01CDEFEE.B0000A60] Since 1984\, more women than men have died each year from heart disease and the gap between men and women’s survival continues to widen.

o The symptoms can be different in women vs. men\, and are often misunderstood.

    * While one in 31 women dies from breast cancer each year\, one in three dies of heart disease.

Thanks to the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement\, 65 percent of women in America now know that heart disease is their No. 1 health threat. This month\, the American Heart Association asks you to expand that statistic by making the fight against heart disease your personal mission.

The American Heart Association offers the following ways to get involved and share lifesaving information with loved ones:

Spread the word: Visit GoRedForWomen.org<http://www.Facebook.org/AmericanHeartAssociationEasternIowa> to post your photo of your company\, church group\, family or friends “going red” in honor of Heart Month! Then\, get your friends\, family and coworkers to vote for your photo during the final week of February.\nhttp://www.kzia.com/ZCAUSE/LOCALEVENTS/tabid/98/vw/3/itemid/665/d/20130201/Default.aspx
