The Cedar Rapids Public Library (CRPL) kicks off the annual Summer Reading Program June 1. Programs are available for babies (0-36 months), children (age 3 through 11), young adults (ages 12-17) and adults (ages 18 and up). Registration begins June 1 and the program runs through July 27. The Children’s Summer Reading Program is “Dig into Reading!” and includes a variety of special programs and events. Children read or are read to by a caregiver in order to reach levels and receive special prizes, including the chance to win one of the three bicycles given away at the end of the program.  Activities include weekly story times held both at the library and out-and-about; craft programs, and films shown every Monday and Friday afternoon.

Special events include “Digging Into Our Community,” a weekly program held Wednesdays at 1:30 pm encouraging children to learn more about the community. These 45 minute programs are geared for 4-12 year olds but are interesting for the whole family. Guests include a the Indian Creek Nature Center, General Mills, KCRG Anchor Beth Malicki, and more!

Thursday Special Programs are held weekly (10:30 am and 1:30 pm) and include visits from the Dinoman, Tom Pease, and the Blank Park Zoo, among others. Children are encouraged to participate in the programs along with reading for prizes.

For our Little Diggers (ages 0-36 months) we offer Playing with Pinterist June 10 and July 8 at 10:30 am; Baby and Me Yoga with Sayde on June 17 and July 15 at 10:30 am; and Music on the Move June 24 and July 22 at 10:30 am.

For young adults, the program is “Beneath the Surface” and encourages participants to read for prizes and choose from a variety of Library programs and services to gain additional entries for the grand prize. Prizes will be given to every participant who completes the program.

Special teen programs include TeensCreate: a workshop for kids who love to learn something new while putting their creative ideas to work. Eight sessions are held this summer and registration is required. Back by popular demand, Good Eats: Cooking in the Library is a fun-filled program for those who like to cook, or just like to eat. These are held each Tuesday between June 4 and July 23 from 2:30 to 4 pm. In addition to these ongoing programs, participate in Teen Volunteer Days, Game On!, Robotics Exploration with Dark Matter and even an End of Summer Reading Lock In. For adults we have “Groundbreaking Reads” this summer. Read three books of your choice and win your very own Cedar Rapids Public Library coffee mug. Participate in some Library programs and be entered to win the grand prize Nook Tablet. Programs include All That Jazz, a free jazz program in Greene Square Park on June 27; Out Loud! Author Series featuring Ann Patchett, Gillian Flynn, and Dennis Lehane; and the Adult Summer Reading Finale Party on July 31 where prizes will be given away to participants.

The Summer Reading Program runs June 1 – July 26. Prizes will be drawn following the completion of the program.

The Children’s Summer Reading Program is sponsored by Hills Bank. The Young Adult and Adult Summer Reading Programs are sponsored by the Friends of the Cedar Rapids Public Library.
